| Confession of Past Sins to Spouse |
Question:
I, as a child of 5 or 6, was sexually abused when I reached 12 the thoughts of it came to my mind and I repeated it on two of my cousins. Now I’m legally engaged to a girl. I always thought I should be sincere to her and she had a right to know about my past if she accepts me after that then only it will be true love she understood me & same thing happened. But I came to know that its haram in Islam to do so. I’m severely depressed. I told her about abuse. Now could I tell her that it was superficial abuse?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
It was not required to disclose your sinful past, unless it has effects on marriage in which case you should certainly do so, in order to protect your future spouse.
Otherwise, there is no need to disclose your past to anyone; I am assuming you have repented sincerely and have fully come clean of this sinful past. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “whoever has been tested with any of these filthy acts, let him take the shelter of Allah, and let him not lift it.” In other words, it is not desirable for you to lift the veil that Allah has placed over your sins.
In conclusion, I urge you to ask forgiveness of Allah of your past sins, as well as your own.
