| Eating Vegetarian Food at Hindu Restaurants |
Question:
I have heard from someone that eating food cooked by people who have not been given the book of God (i.e. non Ahl-e-kitaab) is Haram, even if it is vegetarian food without any alcohal or haram ingrediants. This includes eating at hindu, sikh or mushrik restaurants. Can you please clarify?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
It is wrong to say that we are not allowed to eat vegetarian foods cooked by Hindus or Sikhs. We cannot make halaal haraam. Declaring that which is halaal to be haraam is akin to committing shirk- as Imam Ibn al-Qayyim and others have pointed out.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions used to eat foods prepared by their pagan relatives and neighbors; they only abstained from foods that were haraam. We also know that the prophet's companions used to eat foods prepared by the Zoroastrians and others in the lands that were conquered by Muslims.
