| Major Sins and Judging Others |
Question:
Is there anything one can do to help wipe off major sins (kaba'ir) after making tawbah (repentance)? Are Jews and Christains considered disbelievers according to Islam?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
Major sins are washed away by repentance and virtuous deeds Allah says, “Verily, the good deeds blot out the bad ones."
We are told that the people are judged by how to respond to the message of truth they have received from their Lord. So, if someone did receive the message and rejected it, he or she is deemed a disbeliever. Otherwise, they will be judged by the message they had received before.
We also read in the Qur’an, “ For, verily, those who have attained to faith [in this divine writ], as well as those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Sabians, and the Christians - all who believe in God and the Last Day and do righteous deeds - no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve.” (Qur’an: 5:69).
Furthermore, it behooves to know that ours is the duty to witness the truth we have received; we should not go beyond that to judge send people to heaven or hell. We must leave this judgment to Allah and Allah alone.
