| Parents Welcome Me If I Divorce My Wife |
Question:
I am going through serious issues in my personal life. I got married 2 years ago without my parents permission to a convert that I met in university. My parents did not approve and did not attend the wedding. Now, 2 years later they want me to leave her and come back home. My mother will not accept her but my father does. I am happily married and my wife and I get along perfectly. I could not have asked for a better wife. What do I do?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
You cannot divorce your wife because your father or mother wants you to do so. Divorce is the most abhorrent thing in Islam, in spite of being permissible in Islam. You are, therefore, advised to keep your wife - regardless of the objections of your family as long as she is faithful and Islamic minded.
This, however, does not mean you are allowed to cut off your relations with your parents or kith and kin. You need to do everything possible to foster your blood ties; perhaps your mother may change her mind. You need to pray to Allah to open her hearts to the truth.
Once she has softened up, you can introduce your wife to her. I pray to Allah to bless your efforts to reconcile with your family.
