Rulings on Wearing Hijab (Abaayah / Jilbaab)

Question:
Is abaayah or jilbaab complusory? My mom thinks it is and doesnt approve of me wearing loose clothing and skirts even though they are modest and I cover my front with my hijab. Is there only one way to wear Hijab?

Answer:
Praise be to Allah.

Hijab, according to Sharia, means a dress that covers the whole body of a Muslim woman. This Hijab should:

1) Cover the whole body. Muslim scholars are agreed upon covering the whole body.

2) Not be an adornment in itself, i.e. it should not catch the eye of men. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {…and not to show off their adornment …}[24:31].

3) Be thick, since a transparent dress increases temptation and beautifies a woman.
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam), describing some companions of the Hell-fire, said: "Women who have clothes on their persons, but appear naked".(Muslim)

4) Be wide and flowing, since being tight may give concrete form of one's limbs.

5) The Hijab required in Islam does not have any distinctive compulsory colour that should be considered for every occasion. The Hijab requires a woman to wear clothes loose enough, so that her body's shape and skin colour are not exposed. Also, they should not be decorated so as to attract attention. There is no any particular colour restrictions placed on it. All kinds of colours are permissible with the exception of the colours that attract men and tempt them.

6) Be unperfumed (while a woman is outside of her husband's house), since the Prophet said: "A woman who wears perfume and passes by some people, who find her scent, then she has committed Zina (i.e. a form of Zina)". [Abu Dawood, al-Tirmizi and al-Nasai].

7) Not be similar to men's dress. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Allah curses women who make themselves like men and men who make themselves like women". [Ahmad]

8) Not be similar to disbelievers' clothes. The Prophet said: "Whoever imitates some nation, is considered one of them". [Ahmad]

9) Not be for the sake of fame.

As mentioned above that one of the conditions is that the dress should not be attractive. Generally, a woman wants to wear a good-looking dress so, we strongly believe that one should wear an outer garment like Abaayah or Jilbaab even if her dress is modest.

Finally, we draw your attention that submitting to Allah's Commands is a duty of the Muslim. It is compulsory to believe that Allah's words are true, His promise is unchangeable, all good lies in His Commands, and that all evil is in breaking His prohibitions.

And Allah knows best.
