| Combining Prayers Because of Snow |
Question:
We live in Canada, can we combine prayers (join them) because of snow as it is the case with rain? (Dhohr & Asr, Maghrib & Ishaa)?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
In a country like Canada, where you might have very thick layers of snow covering the ground for several days especially during the peak Christmas season, the Islamic law might be relaxed especially when the basic life necessities might be hampered as a result. In this case, you are allowed to practice joining of the prayers provided that you do not take this as a normal habit. This is based on the fact that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, combined the prayers without either travelling or fear.
Having said this, I must add a word of caution here. If you have the means to perform daily prayers normally in your home or in the nearby mosque along with the community, then there is no need for following the rukhsah (concession).
In short, leave the relaxation of the law (i.e. the concession) to certain unbearable weather conditions with which going out and about becomes almost impossible. Allah says, "So fear Allah as much as ye can." (Al-Talaq: 16).
