| Zakat to My Divorced Sister |
Question:
I am wondering if I can give zakat to my sister. She has just recently seperated from her husband and although she has a full time job (well paying) she also has two children and she is going through financial hardship right now. She is in debt and having a hard time keeping up. Can I pay my zakat to her? How is it exactly calculated on my gold? I have gold from my wedding that I do not wear and don't know how much i have to pay?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah.
Yes you may give it to your sister if she is really in need of this help to pay for her family expenses or her debts. I emphasize really in need.
Calculation is simple: estimate the market value if you want to sell the part that you do not use. And multiply this by 2.5%. This exercise must be done every year and Zakah is paid. A year means: 354 days from the day you acquired for the first time amount of Nisab and every 354 days then after.
