Question:
If I can not go to Masjid for Salatul Taraweeh, but I want to hear the Quran recitation in my Taraweeh salat at home, can I use any audio or video Quran recitation in my salatul Taraweeh?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
You can follow recitation of the Quran from the recorder or other devices to improve your own recitation outside prayer, but this is impermissible inside it, as the Prophet , said, “…in the prayer one is truly occupied…” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim] This Hadeeth means that one should concentrate on his prayer and contemplate on what he says without busying himself with anything else.
Undoubtedly, busying oneself with following recitation of the recorder detracts one from prayer even if the purpose is to improve his recitation.
Moreover, when you want to make Rukoo’ and then Sujood while the recorder is on, this will confuse you during Rukoo’, Sujood and the sitting between the two Sujoods.
On the other hand, if you occupied yourself with pausing the recorder before making Rukoo‘, then you have engaged in an act that is irrelevant to the acts of prayer, which may invalidate your prayer, particularly if this happened inside the five obligatory daily prayers. That is because an act that may be acceptable in the supererogatory prayers is not acceptable in the obligatory prayers.
What is legislated for the one who performs prayers is to recite the Quran and not just to listen to it. Allaah The Almighty Said (what means): {so recite what is easy [for you] of the Quran}[Quran 73:20] This ruling applies to the one who is not led in a congregational prayer.
With regard to the one who is led in a congregational prayer, he should listen to the recitation of the Imaam, which is sufficient for him. Allaah The Almighty Said (what means): {So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.}[Quran 7:204] Imaam Ahmad reported that this verse was revealed in relation to prayer.
This is the ruling on listening to the Imaam, but listening to the recorder during prayer is impermissible for you to do so during prayer and can never be a substitute for one’s recitation.
However, it is permissible for one to read from the Mus-haf (Quran) during the Taraaweeh Prayer if it is necessary.
