Question:
Is it OK to accept the prize of a raffle draw? Today we participated in a community picnic and we were automatically entered into a raffle draw event when we paid $60 ( 3 tickets X 20) as a fee for our family. One of the tickets won a deep freezer as a prize. Can we accept the prize?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
There is no harm, Insha'Allah, in the prizes that are given, if their intention when purchasing community picnic ticket was not to get a chance for the draw.
However, if the motive for participating in such event is in order to obtain a token for the draw, it is not permissible and in this case it is but pure gambling.
The prize of the winner of the draw, if the draw is carried out according to ethics, is Halal money, and it is permissible for the winner to benefit from it.
We are assuming that what you paid for the community picnic tickets is to cover cost of event participation, food, games and etc,
There is nothing wrong with a Muslim buying a product (ticket) and then entering a prize draw from that company (community), but that is subject to conditions:
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Companies nowadays offer prizes to those who buy from them, and we say that there is nothing wrong with this, subject to two conditions:
The first condition:
The price of the item purchased should be its true price, i.e., the price should not be raised in order to cover the cost of the prize. If the price is raised in order to cover the cost of the prize, then this is gambling and is not permitted.
The second condition:
The person should not buy the item in order to try to win the prize. If he buys it only in order to try to win the prize, and he has no real use for the item, then this is a waste of money. We have heard that some people buy cartons of milk or yogurt which they do not need, but they buy it for a chance of winning the prize. So you find that they buy it and pour it out in the marketplace or on the way home. This is not permissible, because it is a waste of money, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has forbidden wasting money. As’ilah al-Baab al-Maftooh, no. 1162.
However, it is not permissible for a Muslim to seek a worldly reward, because if one is not sinful for this intention, he may not get the reward for his deeds from Allah.
