Muslim Association of Calgary (MAC) (2009-12-01)
Muslim Association of Calgary (MAC)
The oldest Muslim organization in Calgary, established in 1958. The first attempt to organize the community during the early 1950`s was through the establishment of a chapter of the Red Crescent Society. The Society collected contributions and sent them to assist needy Muslims in the Middle East.
In 1960, this small number of Muslims were able to buy an old Anglican Church, which was located on 3019 - 17th Ave. SE and converted it into a Masjid. The Muslim Association of Calgary purchased parcel of land in the City of Calgary, west of Sarcee Trail on 17th Avenue S.W. The Masjid opened for prayers in 1978.
For a Muslim Cemetery; a parcel of 74 acres located one Km east of Cochrane on Highway 1A was purchased and after cemetery zoning and legal proceedings, a fund raising campaign was carried out among Muslims in Calgary and surrounding areas to purchase the land. The Muslim Cemetery was licensed and operating by June 1986. The Calgary Muslim Cemetery is the first cemetery in Canada to perform funeral services and burials according to Sunnah (Islamic traditions).
