Muslim Council of Calgary Calls on City Muslims to Help Haiti
CALGARY – The Muslim Council of Calgary (MCC), the elected representative body of the city’s 60,000 mainstream Muslims, today asked all Calgary Muslims to contribute financially towards immediate Haitian relief efforts following Tuesday’s devastating earthquake.
“We will never forget how the world stepped up after the Sumatran earthquake and tsunami,” said MCC Chairman Nagah Hage. “No one knows why tragedies happen, but we do know we must come to the aid of our brothers and sisters in humanity.”
“Calgary’s Muslims can join with the rest of Calgary in donating through Canadian banks or relief organizations, or they can join in donation drives being organized at all of Calgary’s Mosques during Friday worship services,” added MCC spokesperson David Liepert.
“Giving to others in need is a Muslim responsibility,” said Calgary’s senior Imam Jamal Hammoud. “The Canadian Council of Imams is co-ordinating through Human Concern International to get relief to the Haitian people as quickly as possible.”
