Unfortunately, many of our fellow Canadians remain under the false impression that few Muslim scholars, Imams, communities or leaders in Canada or around the world have spoken out publicly against extremism and terrorism.
That assumption underlies many of the justifications we hear for Canada's aggressive role in Afghanistan, as well as the support our government gives to our allies in the Middle and Far East. However, it is simply not true!
While the mainstream Muslim community has been openly and forcefully condemning the extremists ever since 9/11, it has not been adequately covered in the media, and therefore, we keep hearing our fellow citizens ask, “Why are Muslims not condemning terror?"
Please be assured that Calgary's Muslims stand up proudly for peace, justice, and equal rights for all people, regardless of race or creed, around the world. We, like the vast majority of our fellow Muslims around the world, are convinced that this is what our religion commands us to do.
